  • Accountability for site HSE, Quality, Productivity, and Manufacturing Excellence objectives
  • Ensure all aspects/standards of the Responsible Care Safety Program are met
  • Accountable to the Quality Manager for planning, implementing and coordinating quality control procedures and techniques to ensure product reliability and conformance to product specifications.
  • Provides analytical support to the operating plant and service departments in order to identify problems and improve process efficiency

Job Overview and Responsibilities

  • Reviews data and oversees the technical aspects and analytical review of the Laboratory Technicians, including problem resolution;
  • Actively engages and oversees all phases of the manufacturing process:
  • (1) raw material identification and analysis;
  • (2) analysis of process intermediates for process control;
  • (3) analysis and certification of finished product according to manufacturing specifications;
  • (4) auditing and revisions of quality assurance procedures;
  • Responsible for assisting the Quality Manager in the monitoring of the day to day operations of the Quality Control Laboratory;
  • Responsible for the set up and verification or calibration of equipment to ensure that all quality standards are met.
  • Participates/facilitates CI projects including performing and or coordinating corresponding lab work that needs to be completed.
  • Actively investigates new technologies for potential implementation in the QC labs. Responsible for the installation, validation and commissioning of new QC lab equipment
  • Partners with the Research Department to ensure smooth and trouble free transition of analytical procedures from the Research Group to the Control Group and to implement, refine and provide training in the analytical procedures required for the production of new products.
  • Provides analytical support to Service Departments, Production Engineers and Maintenance Engineers through chemical analysis and laboratory tests
  • Provides Technical oversight in identification of the source of problems and devise solutions to those problems. A major responsibility at the Welland site is the technical understanding of the complex, and inter-related processes and systems.  The Plant Chemist is required to understand these systems and provide detailed technical advice to engineers and chemists working on solutions.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest technologies and equipment for both labs (Derivatives and Gases)
  • Acquires technical knowledge and expertise from Technical Development Manager to understand and improve plant processes through Operational Improvement projects.
  • Installs, validates and commissions new QC lab equipment.
  • Ensures that all verifications/calibrations on QC lab equipment are performed to remain in compliance with Solvay and ISO standards.
  • Provides training and assistance to the QC Lab staff and ensures the safe, continuous and accureate operation of the lab areas (Derivatives and Gases)
  • Provides technical coaching on analytical methods and instrument techniques to all lab technicians and technologists
  • Maintains and updates the Technical aspects of the training plan for the QC Labs staff.Assists and/or completes PHA’s, PSSR’s, MOC’s, PCAT etc. action items as required.

Education and Experience

  • Requires BSc Degree or higher in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.  MSc is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience
  • Experience in performing and analyzing Gage R&R,MSA’s and other statistical analysis
  • Ability to lead change.
