Job Overview and Responsibilities:
The Role: Group Leader - Chromatography 


This position is with the Analytical department of Technology Solutions, with research laboratories located in Stamford, CT.  The Analytical Department works intimately with project teams for the Mining Solutions, Polymer Additives and Phosphorus Specialties business towards the continued introduction of new products. The Scientist will be part of a team of highly trained and dedicated scientists in developing, executing and interpreting the characterization of new molecules and polymers. The individual and the team are expected to work closely with project teams on new product introductions, process development, and customer support.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Develop chromatographic methods to separate complex mixtures for trace level analysis and small molecules characterization using separations techniques (LC, GC, IC). Identify the structure and composition of small molecules (UPLC, UPLC-MS(QTOF), GC/MS, Pyrolysis GC/MS, headspace GC/MS and other advanced detectors).
  • Develop and validate quantitative HPLC/GC methods for component/impurity analysis. Implement the analytical methods at plant QC labs
  • Develop effective sample preparation methods to extract target compounds and to reduce matrix interference 
  • Understand polymer characterization using Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), light scattering (LS) and intrinsic viscometer (IV) detectors.
  • Communicate analytical results in a timely fashion. Document in scientific reports. 
  • Interface with project teams to contribute directly to the development of new products, process development and customer support. 
  • Develop into a recognized expert in the fields of chromatography and mass spectrometry for small molecules characterization. Contribute expertise to R&I programs and the company in general.  
  • Train and supervise junior scientists.Lead the Separations group, aligning the group efforts with the business and project needs. Seek fast delivery of good quality analytical results. Manage daily, weekly and monthly laboratory activities, such as monitoring and maintaining of instruments, periodic laboratory cleaning and managing the laboratory waste.
  • 10% of travel required

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Understand and follow key Solvay safety policies and procedures for the site, including but not limited to the following: Emergency Response / Evacuation Guidelines, Visitor Safety Policy, Housekeeping
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety
  • Attend monthly safety training
  • Know the location of first aid and emergency response equipment, chemicals, and chemical documentation.
  • Obtain equipment or process specific safety training as necessary according to the specific hazards



Education and Experience:
  • A Ph.D. in Analytical or Organic Chemistry with a strong research and coursework emphasis in separation mechanism, column chemistry and structural characterization using mass spectrometry.  
  • 5+ years of experience in method development of LC/MS, GC/MS, HPLC, GC, IC, SEC and sample preparation methodologies  
  • Excellent instrument skills including instrument maintenance and repair by in-house diagnostic efforts
  • In-depth knowledge of characterization techniques named above and familiarity with other analytical techniques: NMR, IR, etc. 
  • Exhibit operational excellence in the way he/she organizes his/her laboratory, his/her work and the work of junior staff. 




Skills:
  • Work effectively in a dynamic team environment, the candidate must have extensive interactions with research and development, process development, plants, technical services and other members of the analytical department. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of creativity, strong analytical and communication skills as demonstrated in publications in peer reviewed journals and presentation at national and international meetings. 
  • Exhibit operational excellence in the way he/she organizes his/her laboratory, his/her work and the work of junior staff. 
  • Project management and leadership skills are preferred for potential career development.
