Job Overview and Responsibilities:

The Customs Expert operates in the Customs & Trade Control organization.The organization is part of Solvay Business Services (SBS) Customer Credit and Trade Service Line, which operates mainly in 4 different areas: Customs, Export Compliance, Origin, and Trade Preference & Indirect Taxes. Its main mission is to provide support to the Global Business Unit (GBU) and guarantee compliance for the Group.

Customs & Trade Control organization must also adapt itself to the ever-evolving regulatory environment and share that knowledge with the GBUs, ensure that processes are under control, and identify potential savings opportunities.

Customs & Trade Control is a worldwide managed process extensively deployed through a network of experts located in various countries in different zones.

As a part of SBS Service Line, the Customs Expert has a perimeter covering North American, Europe, and Asia, and will have the following main missions:

Collaborate closely with the GBU to gather the necessary information to determine the preferential origin

Manual determination of origin:

Collaborate with product management and procurement to collectthe Long Term Vendor Declarations from the suppliers

Check the Bill of Materials in the ERP to determine the preferential origin of the products

Share the status of the products with the GBU

Management of origin in Global Trade Systems (GTS):

Launch and Collect the Long Term Vendor Declarations (LTVD) from the suppliers, feed the system with LTVD collected

Check the Bill of Materials in the ERP to determine the preferential origin of the products

Assign the eligibility of the product in GTS

Provide support to the GBU if a certificate of origin can not be printed

Provide any support to the GBU for preferential and non-preferential origin determination

Lead and participate in government and internal audits

Collaborate with the Worldwide Process Expert.

Management of HTS Classification (Worldwide)

Management of Harmonized Tariff (HTS) classification in GTS:

Update the worklist, in collaboration with the GBU, assign HTS codes to items (finished goods, raw material, industrial goods, samples)

Provide support to the GBU to classify all kind of materials used for import and export

Collaborate with the Worldwide Process Expert

Back up:

oEnsure that all activities of CTC North America are correctly managed in case of leave or vacation

Education and Experience:

Experience with a major ERP system, preferably SAP (sales and purchasing streams). Ideally SAP GTS.

Background in International Trade (ideally in Customs area) and have advanced knowledge in origin rules and are comfortable with Free Trade Agreements regulation.

At least 3 years of experience in HTS classification preferably in a highly technical environment. Experience in the aerospace industry will be valuable.


Your interpersonal skills are highly developed, you know how to adapt yourself to the persons you deal with. You must be able to influence others. You must know how to coordinate with several people in multiple locations. Multi-tasking and strong organizational skills are also important.
