Technology Manager, Core Labs Europe

The Technology Manager, Core Labs Europe is a member of the Specialty Polymers RD&T leadership team, reporting to the RD&T Director and is based in Bollate, Italy. This role is critical to manage the core labs in the RD&T organization in Europe and ensures the delivery of GBU expectations. Core Labs are at the crossroads of all the technical activities of the GBU: R&D, CTD, Industrial Plants, RAPS. As such Core Labs are instrumental for the success of SSP GBU.

Job Overview and Responsibilities:
Develop and lead implementation of the appropriate Strategy for the core laboratories, managing current requests as well as prepare the labs for future needs
Ensure in time and in quality answers to the needs of R&D, CTD, Industrial Plants, RAPS.
Manage and lead a large team (100+) of Scientists/Researchers
Provide leadership in balancing the short and long terms needs of Core labs and making effective strategic and operational decisions
Develop annual budgets and performance plans for the core labs scope and people
Set direction, align resources, and foster an engaging environment for employees.
Implement the career management process for R&D Scientists/Researchers; create opportunities for personal growth and development of employees; coach employees to achieve higher performance levels.
Provide alignment with business and R&D perspectives.
Represent technology on ad hoc business projects or customer visits.
Liaise with other Product Lines / Business Units / External Partners to leverage core labs capabilities.
Coordinate R&D resource support needs  with Manufacturing and Sales & Marketing as needed

Education and Experience:


Advanced degree in one or more of the following areas and/or closely related disciplines (PhD is not mandatory but it would be a plus):


physical sciences

materials science 

polymer processing

process engineering


7+ years of experience managing large labs that deliver technologies and services associated with analytical laboratories, processing laboratories, and/or pilot plants and knowledge of quality control methodologies and standards 

Experience in a role that developed a deep appreciation and understanding of health, environmental, and safety; whether best practices, processes, or regulations.

Demonstrated excellent managerial skills
Ability to effectively juggle multiple and at times conflicting priorities
Ability to exercise good judgment and separate the urgent from the important
Understanding of how to recruit, develop and retain employees
Business and organizational acumen and the alignment of incentives
Ability to manage expectations of others
Outstanding interpersonal & communication skills
Demonstrated knowledge of quality control methodologies and standards
A deep understanding of Solvay; our organization, our products, our people, and our culture
A demonstrated attention to customer needs
A working proficiency of the Italian and English languages
