Job Overview and Responsibilities

 To assist in this challenge we are seeking an experienced Chemist to join our Research and Innovation team located within our R&I Centre in Heanor, Derbyshire.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of new technologies for the Composite Industry. 
  • Take the lead in understanding the key business needs of the Composite Industry and target research areas and technology solutions to address these needs. 
  • Provide input to support technology roadmaps and strategy.
  • Facilitate the development and professional growth of assigned technician(s)
  • Define and conduct or supervise experiments, analyse results, review, fine-tune hypotheses and validate assumptions. Supervision will include safety oversight, task planning, prioritization and training.
  • Establish technical relationships with the broader Solvay technical community and with key customers by presenting and discussing research results.
  • Lead and support production operations during new product scale-ups and as required with issues related to the chemistry of existing products. 
  • Assist in the review and monitoring of patent/scientific literature relevant to the industry
  • Write invention disclosures, discuss with internal patent organization, and follow the patent acquisition procedure.
  • Propose and supervise the development or acquisition of new equipment and methodologies.
  • Continuously improve HSE standards and R&I processes.
  • Ensure knowledge and expertise is maintained, developed and exchanged within the team.
  • Lead and conduct in-depth research in the area of thermosetting polymers and related chemistries to develop leading edge technologies/products for the Composite Materials Industry.

Education and Experience

  • You will have a PHD in Chemistry or Materials Science plus at least 4 years’ experience.


  • A Degree or equivalent with at least 6 years’ experience gained in Aerospace, Automotive or Chemical Products alongside knowledge and experience of thermosetting polymer chemistry in the area of adhesives and/or composites.

  • Demonstrable experience gained in Aerospace, Automotive or Chemical Products alongside knowledge and experience of thermosetting polymer chemistry in the area of adhesives and/or composites.


  •      A sound background in Polymer Chemistry and Physics is a required.  In addition knowledge of mechanical testing and analytical techniques to characterize composites is also required for this role.
  •       You will have good technical and problem solving skills along with high achievement drive.
  •      You will be proficient and have practical first-hand knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  •      Demonstrable experience in managing multiple projects and consistently meeting objectives.
  •      Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  •      The desire to want to progress onto higher levels of responsibility over time.
  •      Flexibility to travel up to 20% for this role.
  •      You must be eligible to work in the UK.
