Corporate Strategy Associate

Job Overview and Responsibilities:
The Corporate Strategy team leads, amongst other things, the strategic review of each of Solvay’s global business units (GBU). The Corporate Strategy Associate is a member of the Solvay Corporate Strategy team, and part of the team that focusses on supporting strategy development for the different GBUs. The scope of work includes establishing a robust strategic foundation (internal & external fact base), therefrom defining a value creation plan (where to play, how to win), and supporting the development of an implementation plan. The Corporate Strategy Associate is responsible for delivery of specific analysis modules to support this exercise, working closely with the rest of the Corporate Strategy team. The position is based in Brussels, with some travel depending on GBU location.
  • Be responsible for delivery of specific analysis modules/ workstreams
    • Strategic foundation phase: building fact base on GBU business (product chemistry, value chain, financials, customer preferences, competitive landscape, …)
    • Value creation plan phase: assessment of strategic options (levers, financial impact, …)
    • Mobilization phase: development of mobilization plan with detailed initiatives
  • Develop work plan for module (inputs, deliverables, timing)
  • Collect relevant information through meetings with GBU counterparts & other internal Solvay experts, and complement with external search tools & external experts as needed
  • Analyze information:
    • Qualitative analyses (e.g. chemical value chain mapping, customer preferences, …)
    • Quantitative analyses (e.g. financial projections, cost structure, …)
  • Develop conclusions of analyses and convert to crisp written communication (powerpoint incl. graphs, crisp key take-aways), being coached by senior members in Corporate Strategy team
  • Present findings in Corporate Strategy team meetings and GBU working sessions

Education and Experience:
  • Master degree
  • 3-5 years professional experience

  • Strong analytical & problem-solving skills
  • Able to operate in a project-oriented context, with mindset similar to strategy consulting
  • Knowledge of tools to find & analyze information,
    expert in use of Microsoft Office (incl. Powerpoint, Excel)
  • Good communication and presentation skills, both oral and written communication
  • Basic understanding of chemistry (products, applications, …), and with a strong desire to develop expertise in the chemical industry
  • Basic understanding of financial metrics (P&L, cost structure, …)
  • Output-driven, quick, flexible and organized, able to deliver on time and under pressure
  • Independent, with ability to drive own work module, yet also strong team spirit
  • Fluent in English
